Shinto’s view of salvation

What is Shinto’s view of salvation. During WWII, Shintoism was the primary religion of Japan, and was used by Emperor Hirohito as the monarch to virtually call himself a God, and used Shintoism to inspire the nation. There was no separation of Church and State. What is the meaning of separation of Church and State in our nation, and could such a law have prevented WWII?
