The concept of normative social influence

There is a certain degree of conformity that is critical to a properly functioning society – for example, standing in line at the grocery store or driving between the white lines down the freeway. Without these degrees of conformity, our society would run wild. However, there are other times when we conform to societal norms that are not quite as constructive. In the following video, you will see a group of young girls discussing the ways in which they conform to societal pressures to fit in. As humans, we all naturally desire a sense of belonging that can greatly impact our behaviors and thought processes. Answer the following questions using the concepts discussed in the video below: 1- How does the need to belong impact our willingness to conform? 2- How does the concept of normative social influence play a role in conformity? 3- How might the social norm that defines what is “good” and “beautiful” in a society impact the way the children viewed themselves and their self-worth?
