Interpretation becomes the heart of the paragraph
- Open the paragraph with your opinion. (this is called a topic sentence)
- Next, find a 1-2 sentence quotation that supports your opinion. (quotations are one way that writers use facts in support of opinions). Copy the quotation using MLA style. Here’s a quick guide to help you do this, and let me know if you have questions– Signal Phrase (Links to an external site.)that mentions the author’s name, “Quotation” (page#).
- Finally, interpret the words in the quotation you chose (put the quotation in context, comment on keywords in this quotation) and explain how it supports your opinion. (Interpretation becomes the heart of the paragraph because it’s where a writer reveals her/his logic and shows the reader why the fact matters and why the opinion is reasonable)
