Objectives:

Students will explore deviance by designing a social experiment that breaks a norm in our community. Norms (as we have read) are the socially expected behaviors in a given social/cultural context, and norm violations (a.k.a. deviant acts) often provoke reactions to correct or exclude violators. Your task is to violate a norm and report the reactions to your behavior. An explicit goal of this assignment is to consider behaviors that are taken for granted or uncritically followed. Reactions to a norm violation reveal the desire for conformity.
