Strengths and weaknesses related to this change in mode of operation

Read the HR strategy case and complete the three questions below. Case study: HR Strategy: E-Commerce Comes to Starlight book You are the HR director for Starlight Books in Cambridge, Ontario, a family-owned business since 1910. It has been very successful over the years, providing a wide range of books to its customers. Starlight Books motto is “You want it, we got – or we can get it fast.” The company prides itself on high-quality customer service and the ability to live up to its motto fully. Starlight operations have spread from its single store in Toronto to thirty stores in Vancouver, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and Alberta. The company locates its stores in medium-sized towns because it found competition in the larger cities was too great. It has a highly efficient distribution system to ensure that all stores can live up to its motto. Starlight’s workforce is hired from the local store areas. Stores provide part-time work for local high school students, and full-time employees tend to range in age from the mid-twenties to the late thirties. The company offers a profit-sharing scheme for all its full-time employees. Turnover among these staff members is relatively low, with most staying with the company for several years. Over the past couple of years, the company’s profits have been dropping. Market research has indicated that much of the company’s loss in revenue can be attributed to booksellers operating on the internet. After many soul searching, the current CEO of the company has decided to take the company online. Initially, the company will run all of its e-commerce operations from its home site in Cambridge and use its existing distribution center. As to what this move to e-commerce means for the company’s existing storefront operations, the CEO will only say, “well, we’ll just have to wait and see about that.” Questions: 1. Outline the company’s strengths and weaknesses related to this change in mode of operation [5 marks] 2. Outline the opportunities and threats associated with this change in business strategy. A hazard inspection using the relevant form from the WHSMS

In the next activity step, you will run your WHS briefing session. In line with procedure, and as outlined in action item 6, you are required to conduct a hazard inspection using the relevant form from the WHSMS. Your assessor will set up the room prior to you conducting the inspection. Complete the checklist in full using a pen and make sure it is accurate and legible. You will also be required to record recommended corrective actions as well as future risk control measures. You will be assessed on whether you have correctly identified the hazards and suitable corrective actions and risk control measures. When you have identified a hazard, implement procedures to control the risks involved. Give a verbal commentary on what you are doing, so your assessor can follow the thinking behind your actions. In particular, your commentary should demonstrate how you are using the hierarchy of control to determine the best procedures to implement. Submit your completed HIC to the assessor prior to the next step.

Concept of disequilibrium and emphasized the potential for excess demand for health care services in some areas

This module, I introduced the concept of disequilibrium and emphasized the potential for excess demand for health care services in some areas. I’d like you to consider whether, and to what extent, excess demand should be contained (e.g., through additional management). Where is utilization too high, and who is responsible? Feel free to post an article to make your point, and provide a brief summary.

Quality management initiatives

Measurement is the start of all quality management initiatives. Measurement answers the question, “How are we doing?” The next step in the cycle is assessment, which asks, “Are we meeting expectations?” If you are not meeting the desired outcomes, this is the initiation of improving performance. To ensure identification of the correct improvement efforts, the quality management team must have the knowledge of analyzing data to “tell the story” related to the current state. The assessment phase in quality management involves data analytics.

Functional organisational structure that focuses on business functions

Amazon has a functional organisational structure that focuses on business functions for determining the interactions among the different parts of the company. Amazon’s corporate structure is best characterized as global function-based groups (most significant feature), a global hierarchy, and geographic divisions. This structure seems to fit with the size of Amazon’s business—43% of 2016 retail sales were in the United States. Seven segments, including information technology, human resources and legal operations, and heads of segments, report to Amazon’s CEO. “Senior management team include two CEOs, three Senior Vice Presidents and one Worldwide Controller, who are responsible for various vital aspects of the business reporting directly to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.” The strategic goal underlying this structure is to facilitate Amazon.com to successfully implement e-commerce operations management throughout the entire organisation.
