St. Crispin’s Day Speech

St. Crispin’s Day Speech Background:

The Hundred Years War erupted between the French and the English in 1337 A.D. and lasted more than one hundred years, to 1453 A.D. The issue was of sovereignty and succession. Back in the days of Charlemagne’s offspring, the Vikings became the Normans. The Northmen or Normans occupied the land North of France called Normandy. These gentile Vikings intermarried with the French nobility and became tied to the line of succession in France. Then they invaded England in 1066 A.D. and began their own sovereign country that became England, and French was their language. There is much to this story of Angles and Saxons, and fierce battles. One cannot forget Joan of Arc, “The Maid of Orléans”, and her exploits in the Hundred Years War, between the years of 1428-1431 A.D. When the French king died without a direct successor, the English were in line for the throne in France. That did not sit well with the French nobility. Henry was born in August of 1386 A.D. (or 1387 A.D.) at Monmouth Castle on the Welsh border. In 1413 A.D., at the young age of 26, Henry the V took the throne. He renewed English claims in France to assert his legacy and authority. In 1415 A.D. Henry gathered his army and sailed for France. They had a victorious but costly siege of Harfleur, in which one-third of his army died of dysentery. On October 25, 1415 A.D., the feast day of St. Crispin, Henry’s army defeated a much larger French force at Agincourt. Henry’s army of about 6,000 battled up to 30,000 or 5 to 1. violate a norm and report the reactions to your behavior

Objectives:

Students will explore deviance by designing a social experiment that breaks a norm in our community. Norms (as we have read) are the socially expected behaviors in a given social/cultural context, and norm violations (a.k.a. deviant acts) often provoke reactions to correct or exclude violators. Your task is to violate a norm and report the reactions to your behavior. An explicit goal of this assignment is to consider behaviors that are taken for granted or uncritically followed. Reactions to a norm violation reveal the desire for conformity.

How man’s identity is being challenged and legally adjusted on a global scale

Take a look at this article:https://pledgetimes.com/constitutional-court-rules-italian-children-are-no-longer-automatically-called-like-their-father/

For the last twenty years, issues around manhood and masculinity have been major discussion points around the globe. Books have been published, channels revealed, movies released, courses developed, and songs made—arguments presenting every side of a coin that many believe is determined to lessen men. One thing that everyone appears to agree with is that there is an emergency brewing around issues of “being man” and how that image is presented.  Many have argued that the idea of “manhood” and “masculinity” are in danger.

  • The article above shows how man’s identity is being challenged and legally adjusted on a global scale—one that many argue is endangering the very notion of males maintaining their status as being “man,” let alone their understood position as the unchallenged head of the family

Keep the change in Italy’s law in mind.

If you missed the Oscar’s “slap,” take a look at what happened.

After viewing, why was this so disturbing?  Do our feelings of disquiet have to do with the act of a man slapping a man, which many argued was far more disturbing than if Will Smith—6’2, 220 pounds—had hauled off and punched the much smaller Chris Rock—an action that may have broken bone and possibly caused a concussion, or worse?  Yet the “smack” was seemingly the real issue.  Why?

  • And why did so many of us argue that Chris Rock should have fought back, which probably would have been a futile act given the size difference, as well as the fact that he had just been attacked by a man who was clearly on the edge?
  • Does what you learned about the correlation of being “man” and fighting, as observed in Fight Club—which explained that the idea is not to win the battle, but, more importantly, simply the willingness to fight—speak to what happened?
  • Did Chris Rock forfeit his “man” card?
