External environment factors are impacting The Taj

It is 2011 now, and the “The Taj” hotel, a privately owned, independent, 5-star deluxe hotel located in Delhi’s commercial district, is faced with a turbulent external environment owing to the current global financial crisis.  Since its inception 8 years ago, the hotel has grown in prominence during the bustling economy, and it has been one of the top performers in the luxury market segments over the 4 years preceding the current economic crisis.  The hotel’s main target market is the business traveler (75% of room bookings) who has no problem with paying $500 USD per night for a room.

However, the turbulence in the economic environment has resulted in policy changes such that banks, financial services firms, and automobile firms (which all form an important part of the hotel’s target markets) have cut travel-related expenses for executives.  Executives of these firms can no longer travel first class on their business visits and they must now use only economy class travel.  Moreover, they are now required to cut hotel stay-related expenses, so they have to stay in 3- and 4-star hotels and not pay more than $300 USD per night.  These restrictions have had a major impact on hotels like The Taj and have resulted in a significant reduction in room bookings from the business travel segment, and consequently a significant reduction in profits, to the extent that the hotel is no longer able to cover fixed costs.

The U.S. government is bailing out banks and financial institutions to help them remain profitable, and since a large portion of The Taj’s customers are business travelers from U.S. firms, the hotel’s management team will need to assess the impact of these changes on their strategy.

You have been asked by The Taj to assist their management team in strategic analysis, and assess the impact of these changes on their strategy.

Theory of Group Development

Tuckman’s Five-Stage Theory of Group Development Lists Performing as the fourth stage in the model. The Lecture Notes indicate this is the stage where the actual work of the group takes place. How much time has elapsed (as a percentage of time) in an average project group before the actual work of the group actually takes place. In other words, do you think going through the first three stages (forming, storming, and norming) consumes the first 40% of time assigned to the group before the actual work begins or do you think it is a different percentage of time?

National conference of a peak disability body

Heath is an experienced disability support worker who has recently moved from interstate. The national conference of a peak disability body is held over three days in his new hometown. He attends the entire conference and learns a lot. One of the people he supports in his new job is Neville, an indigenous man in his 30’s. Neville is a musician and has had drug and alcohol issues in the past and has liver damage and mild brain damage because of it. Neville feels disconnected from his cultural heritage. It has been more than ten years since he has seen most of his family members except for his sister Pearl who was responsible for getting him into rehab. He wants to reengage with them; particularly his young nephews who he guesses are about 13 or 14 now. He also wants to start playing music again but not in pubs or clubs. Pearl is a Christian and thinks that music will lead her brother ‘down the path to hell’ again. Neville also wants to get back control of his money. His sister had an administrator appointed when he was on drugs. CS Question 1 List two ways that Heath could help Neville find out about the community inclusion options he seeks. CS Question 2 Give two reasons why Neville might feel it is important to reconnect with his family at this stage of his life and given his culture. CS Question 3 Identify a barrier that Neville may face getting involved in playing music and one idea or strategy to overcome this barrier. CS Question 4 Suggest two ways that Heath could present the information about the options available to Neville and his sister? CS Question 5 Does Neville have the right to control his own money? Role of the Interview: (44 points) We must try and understand that interviews are so essential in the selection process that many times, selection of the candidates is made on the basis of interview alone. Ifhandled properly, interview contributes in, the following, ways: 1. It is the only method of direct contact between the candidates and the employer in which the employer can see a candidate in” action-how he looks, his manner, his wearing, his/her appearance, etc., method of interaction and answering, etc. 2. Many of the information can be sought through the interview, which may not be available in application form, or cannot be disclosed by the selection tests, such as: family background, future plans; etc. 3. The ‘interview can be used as a tool for giving information about the organization, its policies, nature of the work to be performed by the candidate salary and other benefits to be offered. Level in motivation and associated task behaviour

A particular employee is provided with a very aggressive sales goal for next year. Management proposes that if sales double, the employee will receive a 50 percent increase to his/her base pay in addition to his/her sales-based commissions. This represents a substantial increase in compensation, and management is confident the employee will be motivated to increase task behaviour.
Two months into the program, management notices the employee is actually less motivated.

Using expectancy theory, explain possible rationales that may justify the decreased level in motivation and associated task behaviour. (You may make any additional assumptions)
