Self-assessments of individuals’ personalities a relevant tool for discussing a person’s ability

For the monthly team-building meeting for mid-level managers at Grotto Inc., the head of the Human Resource Department has hired a management consultant to facilitate a self-reflection exercise on personality and leadership. You and your colleagues were all asked to individually complete a questionnaire and bring the results to the meeting. The atmosphere at the meeting is tense because Thom and Maria were recently promoted despite being in the company for only a couple of years. Thom and Maria are both external hires and are often praised for their ability to get employees to work together and stimulate innovative work processes in their units. Some of the longer-tenured mid-level managers, however, have questioned the decision to promote Thom and Maria since they only have little knowledge about the specifics and the nuances of the manufacturing process. As the meeting unfolds you are reflecting on the following questions:

  • Q1. Why are self-assessments of individuals’ personalities a relevant tool for discussing a person’s ability to lead and be effective as a leader?
  • Q2. What personality factors are linked to better leadership outcomes, and why?
  • Q3. Why were Thom and Maria promoted? Are some leadership skills more important than others when advancing from mid-level management to executive management positions?

 Police unionism

Police unionism is controversial.  Should police be allowed to unionize?  Should they be allowed to affiliate with other labor unions, such as the Teamsters?  As workers, how can police officers protect their rights except through unionization?  Under what circumstances should police be allowed to go on “strike”?  To engage in work slowdowns?  To conduct “no confidence” votes against their police chiefs?

Concepts of organizational or business strategy

Tentree Apparel is a Canadian company devoted to producing all its clothing responsibly and locally.  The company wants to “become the most environmentally progressive company on the planet”. It uses 100% eco-friendly resources such as sustainably grown organic cotton and unprocessed hemp to create premium-priced contemporary sports clothing. Tentree Apparel provides a unique and superior value to its buyers in terms of product quality and features as well as an additional environmental bonus. For every piece of clothing a customer purchases, Tentree Apparel plants ten trees. The company aims “to plant 1 billion trees by 2030”. The company’s owners adopted a social enterprise model of business with the aim to inspire and build a new group of consumers to tackle environmental challenges through reforestation efforts.

Tentree Apparel is an example of an organization that is making strategic decisions in its attempts to become profitable.

Identify and describe two concepts of organizational or business strategy that Tentree Apparel is using.
