Doing any Research into the proposed topics

Choose carefully! In the past, I’ve seen students grab a topic at the last minute without doing any research into the proposed topics. That got the students through the hurdle of submitting the abstract / topic, but the students later found themselves in a jam when it came to writing the paper. They either couldn’t find suitable, supporting materials, or they didn’t have enough depth to write the paper. My suggestion is that you spend some time performing preliminary research to ensure you have have a topic and supporting references.

2. The research paper is to focus on a current issue / topic in digital forensics. A current topic should be something within the last 0-5 years. Ideally, it would be something within the last 2-3 years. Please do not choose an old topic, a general topic, or something we’ve covered in detail in class, e.g., “The importance of hashing in digital forensics.”

3. If you are thinking of choosing a topic in Cloud forensics, be specific. Do not choose “Cloud forensics” in general. I will not approve “Cloud forensics” as a topic as it is much too broad and there have been many advances in “Cloud forensics” within the last several years. Be specific and narrow down your topic within Cloud forensics as much as possible, if you are choosing this area.

4. I will provide feedback on the abstract and annotated bibliography you submit. Please do not assume that your topic is automatically approved.

Research Topic Instruction

Research Paper

You are required to write a 7-10 page research paper, double-spaced, on a current topic within the realm of digital forensics. The topic needs to be approved by the instructor when you submit the Abstract (Week 7). The paper has to be well referenced. This is defined by having at least two “peer reviewed” references cited. For the purposes of this assignment, we will consider any paper published in a conference proceedings or journal as peer reviewed. The following notes are available from the Purdue OWL Writing Lab.

The Analytical Research Paper You will be writing an analytical research paper, which begins with the student asking a question (a.k.a. a research question) on which he has taken no stance. Such a paper is often an exercise in exploration and evaluation.

For example, perhaps one is interested in Cloud computing…the research question may be “what challenges does Cloud computing pose to the field of Digital Forensics?” Then, the research will lead to a conclusion of what current Cloud challenges are.

The Paper Writing Process:

Once you have identified a topic and research question, you need to do academic research on the topic. For the purposes of a graduate-level research paper, all references must be academically strong, meaning from scholarly journals and published in the last 3-5 years. The best source of research is the UMGC Library.

Once you have enough information to write a 7-10 page paper, the next step is to create an outline. Write a draft report from the outline, proofread and revise to complete the final paper.

The Abstract

The Abstract for your paper is due in Week 7 and should be a brief description of the topic/research question and relevance to the field of Digital Forensics. You should also include a brief annotated bibliography of 1-2 of your references.

Overbearing cake with condescending frosting

“Delia was an overbearing cake with condescending frosting, and frankly, I was on a diet.”

Queen’s Deception

Look carefully at the quotation  that appears above. Virtually  every literary character   in   Moore,   Dante,   Homer,   Virgil,   Sophocles,   Marlowe,   and Shakespeare   who   we   will   read   about   together,   cannot   stay   on   a   diet   or steadfastly refuses to embark upon one in the first place. Select a temptation (in one of these attached texts) that threatens to irrevocably mess things up for our hero.

What is the temptation? Why does the hero or storyteller give in (they always do)? Are the   events  depicted timeless  or  do we still   see  evidence of  these occurrences today?

Select one of the attached texts and focus upon it and authors who write critically about it (and the author).   There are a few ways to approach this study. Imagine yourself as a psychologist or a psychiatrist or a counselor. How would you ‘treat” the hero? Can he/she see that he/she is making mistakes? Does he or she have a mentor? Would others deal with these circumstances differently?

Factors that could increase the likelihood of a Certain health problem

One important application of epidemiology is to identify factors that could increase the likelihood of a certain health problem occurring within a specific population. Epidemiologists use measures of effect to examine the association or linkage in the relationship between risk factors and emergence of disease or ill health. For instance, they may use measures of effect to better understand the relationships between poverty and lead poisoning in children, smoking and heart disease, or low birth weight and future motor skills. The following are some common measures used in epidemiology:

  • Odds ratio: The odds ratio quantifies the association between an independent variable (exposure) and a dependent variable (outcome). It is calculated as the odds that an effect will occur given the presence or exposure to a studied variable, compared to the odds when there is no exposure (e.g., lung cancer and smoking)
  • Risk ratio (also called relative risk): Also quantifies the association between an independent variable and a dependent variable. The risk of an effect occurring in one population versus another population (e.g., preeclampsia in women <35 versus >35). Risks greater than one suggest that exposure to a given variable is associated with an increase in the risk of the outcome, and a risk ratio of less than one indicates that the exposure is associated with a decrease in the risk of the outcome.
  • Mortality: Measure of deaths in a particular population during a specified time interval. If this is attributed to a specific cause, it is referred to as cause-specific mortality.
  • Morbidity: Measure of instances of illness or disability in a population from a given cause (e.g., heart disease) during a specified time interval
  • Incidence: The occurrence of new cases of an effect or disease in a population over a defined time period relative to the size of the population at risk (e.g., new cases of COVID-19 in a population over a 7-day period/1000 people)
  • Prevalence: The number of all cases of an effect or disease, not just new ones, in a population at a given time relative to the size of the population (e.g., number of people with autism/1000)

What is the significance of these measures of effect for nursing practice? In this Discussion, you will consider this pivotal question.

To prepare:

  • Choose two of the following measures of effect to use for this Discussion. Consider the definitions, differences, and utility of each.
    • Odds ratio and risk ratio
    • Mortality and morbidity
    • Incidence and prevalence
  • Consider how these epidemiologic measures strengthen and support nursing practice.
  • Assess practice limitations of not using these measures in nursing practice.
  • Conduct additional research in the Walden Library and other credible resources, and then locate two examples in the scholarly literature that support your insights.
By Day 3 of Week 5

Post a cohesive scholarly response that addresses the following:

  • Explain how your selected measures of effect strengthen and support nursing practice. Provide at least two specific examples from the literature to substantiate your insights.
  • Assess limitations of not using measures of effect in nursing practice.

The systemic nature of gender-based violence and Rape culture

At this point you should read a sizeable amount of information about the systemic nature of gender-based violence and rape culture.

People often talk about GBV as a private, personal experience — one that stems from our interpersonal relationships and/or individual experience.  But as the readings and my lecture indicate, GBV is a systemic problem.

For this thread, I’d like you to answer: What are some of the reasons gender-based violence (GBV) a systemic problem, as opposed to a “personal” or individual experience?  Rather than incorporating a specific number of  key terms, instead, I’m looking for citations/examples from the text (Shaw and  Lee)  and/or my lecture.  (Use “Feitz, GBV Lecture” as your citation).

Please conclude your post with a discussion question.

Possible topics you can explore:

  •  the connections between various types of GBV
  • failure of law enforcement, society, to provide support services and/or advocacy and/or legal consequences for perpetrators
  • pervasive nature (and invisibility) of rape culture
  • gender ideologies and stereotypes that contribute to GBV
  • root causes
  • obstacles in educating and/or informing people about GBV
  • numbers and statistics
  • other observations, insights, etc. from the text, lecture, or real life

If you haven’t listened to my lecture, please go back and do so.  I’m looking for evidence that you’ve read, listened, and ENGAGED with ALL of the material.  This means using concrete examples from the texts and your own observations.

This is intense material and people often feel uncomfortable talking about it given its deeply personal nature and invisibility.   Some men find it especially difficult to talk about  — for reasons that I highlight in my lecture.  But, gender-based violence affects ALL of us.  It’s also pervasive on college campuses — so, let’s be thoughtful, honest, and sensitive as we work through this difficult topic.

Data Analysis

4. Using the slave voyages database below, compare data for twenty-five slave ships that travelled from Africa to Latin America between 1755 and 1757. Focus on either Brazil OR the Caribbean, not both. The response for this question should consist of two parts. The first part is a narrative paragraph where you summarize your findings addressing the following questions: Did one nation control the slave trade in the area? What were the principal departure ports (town/city AND country)? What were the principal destination ports (town/city AND country)? What nations and kingdoms participated in selling slaves in the Americas? What was the average cargo size at departure? What was the average cargo size at arrival? What was the average cargo loss? The second part consists of a table that includes the raw data you collected. The table needs to breakdown the data of your twenty-five voyages. [30 points]
