Major areas of sociological interest

Religion, Politics, Gender and Class

The first set of topics includes two major areas of sociological interest: religion and politics. We may not ordinarily think of popular music as an important feature of these two social institutions, but it certainly is. Music functions as a powerful tool for accomplishing religious and political tasks. This power comes from music’s ability to provide meaning for theology and ideology. Please indicate/reference the reading and page numbers in parentheses where you find the material in our books. Read Ch. 5 in Understanding.
(1) Briefly define religion sociologically. What are the five ways music relates to religion? Give an example for each from the reading
(2) Briefly describe John Michael Talbot. Why is he considered a postmodern case of authenticity? Google JMT and examine his homepage and view some of his recent cable TV program. How has he incorporated contemporary media logic into his ministry? How does he and his ministry compare to your religious/spiritual upbringing
(3) Briefly define ideology. How can popular music be used for conservative as well as liberal/progressive purposes? How does the concept of hegemony fit in with this discussion? What side would you take, and what music fits your ideological position?
(4) What is the sociological definition of institution? How does American Idol support conservative values in America? In what ways is The Voice, American Idol and other competitions like the American presidential election process?
_______________________________________
The second set of topics includes two areas of sociological interest: gender and social class. The purpose of this array of topics is to show how central popular music is to structural sociological analysis, that is, those aspects of society that reflect society as a whole and are closely related to macro ideas such as status differences and inequality. Please indicate the page numbers of the readings where you find the material. Read Ch. 6 in Understanding.
1) Summarize the West Memphis Three situation. How does this unfortunate situation illustrate the limits of community? Explore the Internet to see if there is any update on the case.
(2) What do sociologists mean by doing gender? Give another example of a current prima donna, besides Jessica Simpson. Name one male musical performer who can be considered a prima donna, and why?
(3) What is the sociological definition of authenticity? Briefly discuss Katy Perry’s and Billie Eilish’s authenticity. In your opinion, has authenticity among women musical artists changed recently?

Ecological theory and social work-human services

Ecological theory and social work-human services

1. Provide a clear statement as to which issue of Laura’s or selected case is being
discussed
2. State which intervention model you are discussing
3. Creator(s) of theory and circumstances surrounding the development.
4. What are the key features of the intervention model
This includes the theory behind the model and what the model says about human
nature, how problems develop, and how the model is designed to address those
problems5. Provide an example of how you would apply the model to your case.
5. Provide a brief statement about how you will apply the model
6. Give a brief statement about which aspects of the model would be most helpful, and
why (or why not).
7. Use the literature to support your statements regarding the STRENGTS AND
LIMITATIONS of the theory. Please also include if you would or would not use the
theory in practice, and why

Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

You are to analyze how an author uses certain literary devices to show how a specific character in Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Choose one character from one text and write an essay that closely examines the choices that they make. In your essay consider whether:
 These actions are justifiable. If so, what makes them justifiable?
 Our emotions cloud our judgment. Do characters make decisions based on how they feel?
 Each character thinks their actions through. Do they think about how they will impact others?

RMB Failure as an International Currency

Why the RMB has failed to become an international reserve currency?

It is an international political economy essay.

The paper must address a single research question, present an argument, frame it in the relevant literature and include some empirical evidence to support it. The selection of a research question is the most important step and should be done in consultation with the Instructor. Ideally, a “puzzle” or a surprising outcome makes a good research question, but this is not necessary. The paper must ask a “why?” question. Selecting the dependent variable (the object of explanation) at the start of the process is a key for success.

The fundamental human drive for happiness

Compare/Contrast Death of a Salesman and The Doll’s House.
Compare and contrast the two plays, focusing especially on themes/ideas the two plays share in common or help illuminate. We will cover some of these in class, but a partial list would include such things as the divided life/identity; false dreams of self-fulfillment; the hunger for status, especially related to a certain amount of wealth and possessions; the fragmentation of family; the fundamental human drive for happiness; and so forth. The Actor’s Social/Cultural or
Political reflection
This paper will focus on cultural/political/social reflection and the influence films and
actors have had. Students choose one of the following actors and their films
listed, watch the film, do some brief research and write about the
cultural/political/social impact the star and film had relevant to the film’s era. Why
was the actor in this film important? What barriers did both the actor and film
break? Again, this is not entirely a research paper. It’s important to see your own
reaction to the performance and how you see the effect of the actor/film in regard
to cultural/political or social influence. As with Response 1, it’s integral to see the
actor in this film through your eyes!  The minimum word requirement is 600 to 750
words but feel free to expand if needed. Cite

Philosopher of science,

Find a book-length work of history on one of the major figures or topics from the course. The object of your analysis should be a piece that has been written recently (in the past 30 years or so) by a historian or philosopher of science, not a historical piece. E.g. you should be writing a book report on a book that is ABOUT Aristotle or Islamic mathematicians, NOT something written BY them. (For a list of course figures and topics see the Schedule below.) You will then offer a concise and focussed critical analysis of your chosen book, including what other reviewers have said about it.

The book report is to be on the book PREFACE TO PLATO by ERIC A. HAVELOCK.

You are to find a historical or philosophical book on any of the historical figures we
discuss in this class (not just the ones we have discussed thus far), or on any of the topic
issues for any of the units on the Course Syllabus. The book is supposed to be a historical
or philosophical treatment OF the period, not FROM the period. In other words, it would
be fair game to read a historical account of Descartes’ place in anatomical science. BUT
DON’T READ A BOOK BY DESCARTES.
You will carefully read the book and assess its merits. You
then have two main tasks:
(1) Clearly convey to your reader what the main ideas of the text are, and what is special
about this text. For example, if you are reading a book about Newton’s account of
Absolute Space and Absolute Time, what makes THIS book different from other books on
the subject? What is the author’s thesis, or most important novel claim? How is the book
structured differently than other books on the subject? (Authors usually give you answers
to these questions in a Preface or Introduction.)
(2) You must critically assess the work. Do you think the author supports his or her claims?
Why or why not? Do you think the author focusses on the right material? Why or why
not? How do you think the work could be improved?

Relevance of international relations

Your task for this assessment is to write an answer to the following question:
 ‘We are all internationalists now, whether we like it or not”’ (Blair, 1999).
What is the relevance of international relations for thinking about politics
today?
For this assessment, you are being asked to reflect on what an international
approach adds to the study of politics. You need to support your answer with
evidence from the academic literature. Remember you need to provide
references for all of your sources of information.
This assignment is designed to assess your ability to:
1. Show understanding of core political ideas (learning outcome one)
2. Demonstrate the capacity to form a political argument (learning outcome
four)
3. Understand and apply academic conventions relating to writing,
referencing and critical analysis (learning outcome five)

Numerical values describing the resources

1) Identify a soil resource of interest (this should be a region or county) anywhere in the world and describe how it is being used and why it is important.
2) Summarize attributes of soil and water resources that exist in that region. Please use a tabular format or list that includes numerical values describing the resources. This information should help you understand how susceptible soil and water resources might be to degradation. Please cite any data sources you use to develop this section.
3) Summarize important factors (climate, land use, demographic), that have and will likely cause soil change. Include an original graphic or table that helps you summarize ideas and explain relationships between factors and function. If you adapt an image or figure that someone else published indicate this in the figure or table legend.
4) Speculate about current soil condition (provide evidence if you can) and discuss how factors identified above (#3) are likely to influence soil function.
5) Explain why you think this soil could or could not resist or recover from degradative processes identified above.
6) Discuss implications of soil change for water quality and quantity.
NOTE: The style of writing must be that of  University writing, the phraseology and words must match that
