EXAMPLES OF EATING STYLES:

Paleo
Vegetarian
Vegan
Ketogenic
Whole 30
South Beach
Mediterranean
Atkins
Weight Watcher
Zone
USDA MyPlate
Raw Food

3. You will write a 220+ word essay/discussion about how this way of eating is beneficial to or detrimental to human health – what diseases/conditions does it cause/cure. You must use at least two valid peer-reviewed sources of scientific research, published within the last five years, to support your opinion. Be sure to include both in-text citations and list the references for your sources using MLA format. In-text citations and references do not count toward the discussion word count.

Development of a research question

ENG111 Research Paper Assignment

For this assignment, you will write a 6-8 page research essay. Your essay may be argumentative OR analytical, but either way, the development of a research question is central to the essay. The research question provides a guideline for you to follow wherever the information in your research takes you. You will be expected to use a variety of sources to develop your ideas.

The following types of research might be incorporated into your essay:
• Primary sources
• Secondary sources
• Qualitative data
• Quantitative data
• Scholarly sources
• Popular media sources relevant to your topic
• Interviews

In developing your focus for the research paper, consider an issue or debate you are passionate about and/or curious about. Your goal is to research this topic, analyze the available information, find connections, and take a stance or explain your conclusions. Your argument or conclusion should be supported with evidence from your sources. In order to come up with something specific and important, try focusing on a point of debate, a piece of the issue that is under-addressed, or a perspective that, in your opinion, has not been fully explored.

Remember, it is better to narrow your focus and investigate one aspect of the issue deeply than to give an overview of a whole topic.

Your paper should follow this criteria:
• 6-8 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font Times New Roman (standard one-inch margins)
• Minimum of 5 sources: primarily scholarly, at least 1 primary and at least 4 secondary
• MLA citation style

Creating Balance in Society

Creating Balance in Society

The paper should be a more focused discussion of some aspect of the play that you presented
on. You would most likely write on the material you presented, but you may need to modify
the topic in order for it to work as an essay.
The structure of the paper will be shaped by your goal in writing it. There are two modes of
writing you might be employing:
• Expository (Information) essay that provides clear information about the topic without
or minimally inserting the author’s opinion. For example, if you presented on feminist
themes in Electra, an expository essay would describe aspects of Electra’s life that are
explored in the play and discuss how these depictions conform with or transgress
Athenian conventions. Your argument would emerge from the degree to which you
think the play adheres to its original audience’s expectations. This type of paper
should not make ethical judgements about the lives of women in antiquity, etc., but
only give a factual exposition of what they were like. The goal of this type of paper is to
inform the reader of facts and prove some conclusion about how the facts relate to one
another. This paper provides a definite answer to a specific question.
• Interpretative (Argumentative) essay that expresses the author’s opinion of what the
text means or how a reader should assess the characters and plot of the play. For
example, if you presented on feminist themes in Electra, an interpretative essay could
argue that Electra exhibits traits that are admirable according to a feminist position.
You would likely provide some historical information on the expected behavior of
women, but you should go further than to say Electra does or does not meet
expectations. You should also explain the ethical assumptions that underlie a feminist
reading of the text and demonstrate how the text satisfies those assumptions. The goal
of this type of paper is to persuade the reader that your position is correct by
evaluating the meaning of facts about the text. This paper provides a plausible solution
to an open-ended problem.

Moral and Political Philosophy, Karl Marx’s Aspects of Alienation of Labor

Write an essay on one of the following topics. Choose whichever question you can answer best.
1. Is the Socrates that emerges as a supporter of strict obedience to the laws in the Crito at odds with the Socrates who is apparently determined to defy any potential court order forbidding further public philosophising in the Apology? Whatever stance you take, be sure to justify your answer.

2. In Politics Book I, Aristotle makes a defence of slavery as a natural institution. According to Aristotle, for whom and under what circumstances is slavery appropriate? Critically discuss the success of Aristotle’s natural slavery argument.

3. In Hobbes’s Doctrine of the State of Nature, Merriam writes: ‘Although “naturally” man is a stranger to political life and looks askance at government, as one who would not be entangled on its net, yet he possesses irresistible impulses to enter the civil condition, and inevitably passes over into it. Naturally he is out of society, but inevitably he comes in.’ (Merriam 1906, 156)

Present and critically analyse the account of this “coming in” to society that Thomas Hobbes offers in Leviathan.

4. In the Second Treatise on Government, John Locke offers an account of how the just initial acquisition of private property is possible. He writes: ‘But I shall endeavour to shew, how men might come to have a property in several parts of that which God gave to mankind in common, and that without any express compact of all the commoners.’ (Chapter V, Section 25)

Present and critically assess Locke’s argument for private property.

5. According to Jean Jacques Rousseau, his version of the ‘social contract’ can be reduced to the following formation: ‘Each of us puts his person and all his power in common under the supreme direction of the general will, and, in our corporate capacity, we receive each member as an indivisible part of the whole.’ (Of the Social Contract, 1.6)

Present and critically discuss Rousseau’s conception of the general will.

6. In On Liberty, J. S. Mill offers ‘one simple principle’ designed to regulate the restrictions that governments and societies can place on the liberty of their citizens. He writes that ‘the only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others.’ (On Liberty, Chapter 1).

Present and critically examine Mill’s Harm Principle.

7. In Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts (1844), Karl Marx examines four aspects of the alienation of labour in capitalist society. Present the four aspects of alienated labour and critically assess Marx’s solution to the problem
