The endocrine disorder dwarfism

Create a patient with the endocrine disorder dwarfism giving him/her the characteristic risk factors and signs and symptoms of the disorder.  I’ll give you an example of how to start:  “Mrs. Jones is a 32 year old female who has lived her whole life in Michigan.  She has noticed that her vision is blurry when reading and she has not been able to complete her usual walk because of leg weakness and tingling…”

Clinical research founded on a mix of moral considerations and past occurrences

The most shocking scandal was about the health consequences of pilots who were placed in vacuum chambers with low air pressure and lack of oxygen by Nazis. The most touching part is that they were in a concentration camp and had no choice but to participate or not be informed about the procedure. Those 23 Nazi doctors in addition to being fed just salt water for days and being submerged in ice water for hours, subjects were also used in experiments with battlefield medicine.

The biggest problem was no one could regulate any of this “experiment”. They didn’t be informed of the consent. Also, any of the doctors followed any ethical rules.

The existing guidelines for clinical research are founded on a mix of moral considerations and past occurrences, some of which were extremely tragic. The uncovering of the horrors done by Nazi doctors marks the beginning of the contemporary era of human subject protection. After all unethical treatments, a set of guidelines is known as a Nuremberg code now. Since biomedical research has advanced significantly over the past century, ethical issues in clinical research are more important than ever.

What does the term synergism mean in relation to drugs and therapeutics?

It does not need to be a primary research article (i.e., a review article will fulfill this requirement).- you will need to justify why you believe these sources are credible. Answer the following questions to learn more about phage therapy. Broadly, what is the goal of phage therapy?  What are lytic phages? Why are lytic phages (as opposed to other types of phages) required for phage therapy? Phage therapy is not likely to be a replacement for antibiotics, but there are indications that the two therapies can be used synergistically to combat MDR infections. Increasing difficulty controlling her blood sugar

Joan is an 82-year-old woman whose husband died last year.  Now, she lives alone in a small apartment with no money for “luxuries”.  She has no family or friends in the area having relocated for her husband’s job.  She takes medication for type 2 diabetes but has had increasing difficulty controlling her blood sugar because of her “sweet tooth”.  She generally eats alone and reluctantly admitted she has been drinking more than she used to (at least 3 alcoholic beverages a day).  Although she is able to cook, she prefers not to and frequently skips meals.  She also admits that she won’t eat anything green, so her diet is lacking vegetables.  She has been referred for nutritional counseling because she has lost 20 pounds this past year without dieting. She is 5’5” tall and weighs 110 pounds.

What do you think is the underlying issue causing the weight loss?

What should be done in the short term to help Joan with her weight?

What should be done long term to help her maintain good health?

What factors contributed to Joan’s weight loss?

He had been acting lethargic and confused before he fell.

Carli is a nurse who works in a hospital.  One of her patients is, Stanley, a 65-year-old man, who passed out in his kitchen this morning, fell, and cut his head open.  When his daughter brought him to the emergency room, she said that he had been acting lethargic and confused before he fell.  To be on the safe side, after cleaning and stitching Stanley’s wound, his doctor decided to keep him in the hospital for observation over-night. When Carli came to check on Stanley, he quietly asked if she could help him with his urinal, as he did not feel strong enough to get to the bathroom on his own. He apologized for his raspy voice, telling her that his mouth was a bit dry.  Carli assisted him and then went to empty his urinal.  As she did, she noticed that the urine was nearly orange in color.

What condition does Stanley have and how can you tell?

Topics that can be used to measure the quality of healthcare in the US

REVIEW

In order to utilize the US Healthcare System, one must recognize the issues of access, costs, and quality of care. All three of these are clearly involved in any healthcare decision. These healthcare decisions may be involved with a person’s adherence to medication regimen, preventative health programs, mental health care, pregnancy care, and many more health services. Thus, reviewing barriers to access, cost and quality is part of the search for healthcare in the US.

RESPOND

Explain the barriers to healthcare access and how community resources are helping to overcome these barriers.
What are some measurement topics that can be used to measure the quality of healthcare in the US?

How have your experiences in the US system measured up to the quality measurements you referred to in this discussion?
