Collapse of the Soviet Union

Was the collapse of the Soviet Union a foregone conclusion?  George Kennan proposed a policy of containment early in the Cold War.  He thought that if communism was held to where it was it would inevitably collapse as a flawed system.

Disparities in infant mortality rates between different groups

Chapter seven discusses infant and child health, and includes information on the disparities in infant mortality rates between different groups.  The objective of this assignment is for you to compare infant mortality rates between two counties (67 counties in Florida) found in Florida.

There are quite a few sources for the information.

Are the rates close between the two groups?  Remember that infant mortality is measured by the number of deaths per 1000 births.  Many counties in the state do not have that many births (25 counties have a population of less than 50,000 and only five counties have a population over 1 million).  The number of births may be so small that the rate can be largely influenced by one death.  For example, if there were 100 births in a small county during one year, and one infant did not make it to the first birthday, the rate would be 10 compared to a larger county with 1000 births, and seven infants did not make it to the first birthday would be 7.

Identify a disparity found in the available statistics.  What factors influence the rate or disparity found?  Use your critical thinking skills.  Is the information found consistent with the info in the text?

A chronic health condition that “might be considered a disability

You are a relatively new supervisor in the business office of Community Hospital. Thus far you have interviewed prospective employees only a few times. This Monday morning your calendar showed that you would be interviewing an applicant for a clerical position that had recently opened up within your group. The applicant, Ms. Arthur, arrived at the appointed time. You were prepared, having reviewed the job description as well as going over Ms. Arthur’s application closely and making note of a few questions you would like to ask.

Upon entering the private office you had borrowed for the interview, Ms. Arthur, well-dressed and neat appearing, first said, “Thanks for seeing me. I hope you like me because I really need this job.”

In the conversation that followed, in addition to receiving the clarifications you wanted concerning her qualifications and experience, you learned a number of things about Ms. Arthur. All from statements she made voluntarily, you learned that Ms. Arthur: had been married but was divorced; was a single mother with two children to care for; had been out of work for some time because of a work-related injury; felt she had lost her last job because she filed a Workers’ Compensation claim; was facing financial hardship; and spoke of a chronic health condition that “might be considered a disability.”

Questions: (Note – label your answers as 1, 2, 3, and 4.)

1.      What information has Ms. Arthur given you that you would not be legally entitled to request?

2.      Keeping in mind that all the personal information you received was provided voluntarily, what can you do with this information?

3.      In response to the comment about the condition that “might be a disability,” can you ask the nature of that condition? Why or why not?

Management models best applied by the tertiary care center

A group of sales marketers lrepresentatives worked for a health informatics company. A person scheduled for a visit to a widely known tertiary hospital in Los Angeles. Medical staff was tasked to show and make the administration of the tertiary care center understand the importance of health informatics in the healthcare setting. The company heavily relies on the medical staff, and the main goal is to be able to persuade and educate the admin on why it is important to have health informatics in their organization. The medical staff must let them know how they will use it for their organization to improve and how they can benefit from it.

In that scenario, these three management models are best applied by the tertiary care center when they adapt to change?

a. Kurt Lewin’s Unfreeze-change refreeze model

b. Prosci’s Adkar Model of change

c. Kotter’s 8-step change model

The social determinants of health

This week we will look at the social determinants of health. The social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age, including the health system. These circumstances are shaped by the distribution of money, power and resources at global, national and local levels.

Think about your own environment where you grew up and answer the the following questions in your post:

What are some examples of the ways your local environment (e.g. neighborhood, town or city) influenced the health of the people around you?  Discuss at least two specific examples.  (You may wish to add both positive factors that benefited health, and negative factors that may have caused harm).
