Statistics from the Health and Safety Executive indicate that from 2016 to 2017 work related back disorders were responsible for the loss of 3.2 million working days. For the economy, that’s a huge amount of lost working time, but on a more personal level these numbers show the big difference a back injury can make to someone’s working life. For each case included in the statistics, the average number of working days lost was 16.5 days.

 

Based on the above situation, you have been hired as a consultant to develop a back injury prevention program. How would you apply strategies to make sure the back injury’s problems could be reduced in the workplace?

A hazard analysis

A hazard analysis is used as the first step in assessing risk. The result of a hazard analysis is the identification of different type of hazards. Hazard analysis is defined as the process of collecting and interpreting information on hazards and conditions leading to their presence to decide which are significant for safety, and should be addressed in an organization. You as a Safety Manager are required to:

a. Classify key components of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Process Safety Standard.

b. Implement  approaches to conduct hazard analysis at the workplace.
