Relationship between mental functioning and specific measures of social interaction

  • “Spending just 10 minutes talking to another person can help you improve your memory and your performance on tests.”
  • “In one study, they examined ISR survey data to see whether there was a relationship between mental functioning and specific measures of social interaction. The survey data included information on a national, stratified area probability sample of 3,610 people between the ages of 24 and 96. Their mental function was assessed through the mini-mental exam, a widely used test that measures knowledge of personal information and current events, and that also includes a simple test of working memory.
  • Participants’ level of social interactions was assessed by asking how often each week they talked on the phone with friends, neighbors, and relatives, and how often they got together.
  • After controlling for a wide range of demographic variables, including age, education, race/ethnicity, gender, marital status, and income, as well as for physical health and depression, the researchers looked at the connection between frequency of social contact and level of mental function on the mini-mental exam.
  • The higher the level of participants’ social interaction, researchers found, the better their cognitive functioning. This relationship was reliable for all age groups, from the youngest through the oldest.”

Assume that the causal relationship in the article is that lower intellectual abilities lead to more social isolation. How might you be able to make the same argument for this direction of causality? In doing so, how does it change the relationship between the variables?

Dependent variable will be measured and collected

A brief description of the theory/hypothesis (that is, whether you think that a fast or slow – or something else – tempo will increase sales. It would also help if you could explain what ‘fast’ and slow’ meant. B) A description of the independent (influencing/causing) and dependent (influenced/’caused’) variables. How the independent variable will be changed. And how the dependent variable will be measured and collected. C) How you will ensure that the study will include sufficient data to not be subject to random negative effects (that the only time a slow tempo is measured is a rainy night in February).

Diagnosing depressive disorders

Accurately diagnosing depressive disorders can be challenging given their periodic and, at times, cyclic nature. Some of these disorders occur in response to stressors and, depending on the cultural history of the client, may affect their decision to seek treatment. Bipolar disorders can also be difficult to properly diagnose. While clients with bipolar or related disorder will likely have to contend with the disorder indefinitely, many find that the use of medication and evidence-based treatments have favorable outcomes.

Overcome the problem of intangiblety

In class we talked about the differences in services and products, specifically that the intangiblety of service products results in a different evaluation of services before they are purchased. Generally, products are much easier for consumers to evaluate before purchase than services are. But the differences go further – it extends to communication and advertising. Sometimes companies struggle to communicate and overcome the difficulties posed by intangiblety For many services it is difficult for companies to communicate/advertise the real benefits and with some services the difficulties are more dramatic than others e.g. – insurance, management consulting, legal services, investment services, advertising services, public relations, fitness- personal trainers…and hotels, restaurants. As the service sector grows and competition increases many service firms are starting to advertise and promote their services more. It is not enough to simply create awareness. Many hospitality companies are advertising their services much more aggressively than ever before. Follow the format of the questions below: 1. Select two Tourism/Hospitality companies (you need 2 actual companies) and search for samples of recent advertising in English.
