NORMA’S POST:

Hello class,

I chose a television commercial advertising Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate. The commercial features an Asian man entering a bus and taking a seat. The man is dressed in black clothes adorned with metal studs.

The people on the bus seem wary of the man and react by pulling their belongings closer with a frightened look. On the bus is a crying child seated with his mother. The child spots the man, and their interaction stops the boy from crying and brings a smile to his face. Then we hear Cadbury’s tagline,

“Goodness that melts your heart.” The clear message is: Don’t judge a book by its cover.

The stereotype here is that the man is probably in a biker gang and may be dangerous. The clothes that he’s wearing are typical of what members of biker gangs usually wear. The generalizations made here are that only biker gangs wear black clothing adorned with silver studs which is not true.

CHARLES’S POST:

The stereotype that I can see, is that strength and power overcome anything. Masculine over humility. The media clip I choose portrays Darth Vader. It reflects that the dark side is strong, unbeatable, and powerful. How did it influence the social situation in the clip? Well, it made Luke Skywalker fight back. That you have to fight back and have no fear.

BRENDA’S POST:

Hello Professor and Classmates,

My name is Brenda and I live in Upstate NY, I am married with two children, our son that is sixteen and our duaghter that turns 13 this month. I come from an average family with two older siblings a brother and sister.

My story begins while I was in high school it was my senior year. On May 17, 1993 my father suffered a cardiac arrest. The EMT’s and hospital staff worked on him for two hours and ten minutes. They revived him. Like I said being my senior year I was getting ready for college, my parents and I had been on many tours and finally decided on “The One” I was very excited to be headed off on a new journey. However, God had different plans for me than going to college.

It just so happened that all the services that my father was receiveing at home were about to end, his physical, speech and occupational therapies. So I made the decision to saty home and take over my fathers care.

This started my interest in becoming a nurse. When my father was able to be home alone for short periods I went to take my Certified Nursing Aide class and passed. I worked in the nursing home setting, the hospital setting on Pediatrics and Women’s Health for five years, then moved to Missouri and worked for Health Midwest at Menhora Hospital before moving back to New York. I was then a pediatric home health aide for seven years then I got married and started our family.

It seems that healthcare just continues to follow me and I am needed to care for others. I am quick to help anyone I can, if I can. I donate food to families that don’t have enough. I feel that I am a caring, warm hearted, patient, and respectful individual. Fast forward to when my son was four years old and my care giving in the medical sense starts again as he was diagnosed with Acure Lymphoblastic Leukemia and this was devastating news to my husband and I. With our daughter about turn one two hours away while we are at the hospital with our son was hard as well.

Our son made it through three and a half years of chemo and treatments and today we say he is cancer free. Fastward to today.

I chose this degree because I have so many firends that suffer from PTSD, anxiety, depression and so many other mental health issues. It seems like they have a hard time getting into see therapists and counselors, I love helping people and I want to try to make a difference in people’s lives. I know you can’t help everyone.

Then we realized that our children have a hard time expressing themselves and I wanted to be able to help them cope with life and hard times to the best of my abilities. This is where my story is now I here at Post full time and running a household, and trying to build a house ourselves we have a lot on our plate but we will pull through.

TYNE’S POST:

Top of Form

Hello, my name is Tyne Reinosa and I’m currently pursuing my B.S in Human Services.  In this paragraph I’ll be telling you a little bit about myself. I’m 27 years old and I currently reside in FL. I live with my boyfriend of 10 years, my mother, and our teenage son who we’ve been raising for about 5 years now. I know what you all are probably thinking to yourself how we are raising a teenager if we’re such young adults ourselves. Long story short, my boyfriend’s coworker asked if we could become his guardians since he loved being with us.

I would love to elaborate more however I’m trying to make this short and simple. I’m currently in the process of becoming a licensend agent for healthcare. I unfortunately don’t have a set schedule at the moment. What I’ll be doing is on some of my days off I’ll be dedicating a whole day to schooling.  When I started Post University, I was unemployed so this will be different for me this term. I’m not going to lie I’m a bit nervous about this class only because I struggled in writing back in HS. I’m not going to allow that to scare me. I’m super stoked to see what this class is going to bring me.

Cultural variations in the Birth experience

In this discussion we will explore cultural variations in the birth experience. For instance, kangaroo care, which is described in the text, was first initiated by two South American neonatologists to involve parents in the care of their preterm children and to decrease some of the stress associated with an infant needing neonatal intensive care.\

Parents who have experienced kangaroo care express excitement and joy with the practice.

  • In Guatemala, traditional midwives provide the majority of maternity care and are responsible for 60 to 75 percent of all births. Government-run midwifery training programs are grounded in a holistic model, which views childbirth as a normal process having powerful emotional, physical, cultural, and spiritual dimensions.
  • As a third example, many cultures have dances that have roots in childbirth preparation. These dances often center around pelvic movements and exercises that help women’s bodies to relax, stretch, and open naturally during birth. These include cultures in Hawaii, Seneca (Native American), Tunisia, and several other areas throughout the Middle East, North Africa, and parts of Asia. In certain parts of Asia, for instance, the practice of “dancing baby down” includes the techniques of “belly roll” and “flutter.” These movements are virtually identical to two of the exercises commonly taught in Lamaze classes to help prepare women for the stresses of labor: “pelvic rocking” and “deep breathing.”

First, please watch the 2 videos linked below – one is a birth occurring in Kenya, the other is a birth occurring in Vietnam.

The traditional midwives of Isiolo

Birthrights – The Mountain Midwives of Vietnam

(For this one – Vietnam – you are welcome to skip forward to 17:00 when the woman is in labor though the entire video is very interesting to watch)

DISCUSSION ASSIGNMENT

1. Reflect on the birth experiences of the 2 women in the videos as compared to normative birth experiences in the US. (If you are unsure about birth in the US, there are plenty of videos on YouTube you can watch). Specifically, what stood out to you in each of the videos as positive? What stood out to you in each of the videos as troubling/negative?

2. Go online and look up birth experiences from another culture. Post the culture you researched and a very brief summary of the information you found.

3. Based on the information you saw in the videos, read in the text and in the beginning of this assignment, and what you found through your research, are there things you feel are especially important for childbirth REGARDLESS  of cultural norms? What are they?

Competitor Research

MBA 699. 4-1 Report: Potential Alternative Buyers/Competitor Research. Competitor research is very important during acquisition analysis. This is a strategy that entails researching major competitors to gain proper insight into their products and services, market share, profitability, and more.

Competitor research also allows a company to examine the strengths and weaknesses of the main competitors, enabling them to determine possible threats and opportunities. In this report, I will identify and research the top three companies in the life sciences industry, focusing on medicines and pharmaceuticals.

North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Code

The North American Industry Classification System is the standard utilized by Federal statistical agencies to classify companies for the purpose of gathering, examining, and publishing statistical data linked to the United States business economy.

Based on the information provided in the case scenario, the organization is a life sciences company that manufactures cancer treatment drugs. Thus, the NAICS code for the company is 32541. I will use this code to find potential buyers. More specifically, I will use the code to identify companies that engage in the manufacturing of medicinal and pharmaceutical products.

Top Competitors

The top three companies in the pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing sector include Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, and Bristol-Myers Squibb. Pfizer is an American biotechnology and pharmaceutical company headquartered in Manhattan, New York, United States. Johnson & Johnson, on the other hand, is an American company that manufactures pharmaceuticals, consumer packaged goods, as well as medical devices.

It is headquartered in New Brunswick, New Jersey, United States. Bristol-Myers Squibb is a pharmaceutical company committed to developing innovative medications for patients with serious illnesses, including cancer. The company is located in New York, United States.

I utilized three criteria to shortlist these companies. These include 1) industry, 2) geography/region, and 3) size and profitability. I chose these criteria to ensure a successful acquisition. The three companies must be operating in the pharmaceutical industry, and they must be committed to the development and delivery of cancer treatment drugs. Both Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, and Bristol-Myers Squibb make cancer medicine. Additionally, the three companies must be profitable to ensure a successful acquisition. We do not want a scenario where the acquirer backs out due to financial difficulties. Also, the three companies must be located in the United States. Geographic distance matters a lot in the acquisition process (Bick et al., 2017).

It has a significant influence on acquisition premiums, as well as completion time. We can have a faster time to completion the closer we are to the acquirer. I considered several other criteria but did not use them.

These include reasons behind acquisition, having a shared vision and goals, and having a good work ethic. I did not use these criteria because they are less likely to influence the success of the acquisition.

Company Information

Pfizer

Pfizer is among the leading biopharmaceutical companies around the globe. The company hopes to innovate in order to bring treatments to patients. Pfizer specializes in several products, including vaccines and pharmaceutical drugs that treat different conditions, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, inflammation, and many other conditions. As of 2019, Pfizer’s held 5% of the world’s prescription drug market (Mikulic, 2021). Its CAGR is around 9%.

Johnson & Johnson

Johnson & Johnson is among the largest pharmaceutical companies in the globe. The company hopes to change the health trajectory for humanity. It specializes in household products, surgical products, orthopedic implants, prescription drugs, and over-the-counter drugs (Compton, 2022). As of 2019, Johnson & Johnson held around 4.6% of the world’s prescription drug market (Mikulic, 2021). The company’s CAGR is around 5.5%.

Bristol-Myers Squibb

Bristol-Mayers Squibb is among the biggest pharmaceutical corporations in the United States and across the world. The company hopes to be the top biopharma corporation that transforms the lives of patients through science (BMS, n.d.). Bristol-Mayers Squibb is committed to developing innovative drugs for patients with serious illnesses. As of 2019, the company’s market share was around 2.9 percent (Mikulic, 2021). The company’s CAGR is around 4.0 percent.

Conclusion

The top three companies in the pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing industry to consider if we decide to look for an alternative buyer are Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, and Bristol-Myers Squibb. The three criteria I utilized to shortlist these companies are 1) industry, 2) geography/region, and 3) size and profitability. The three companies must be operating in the pharmaceutical industry, they must be profitable, and they must be located in the United States. Both Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, and Bristol-Myers Squibb meet these requirements. I chose these criteria to ensure a successful acquisition.

Business Obligations

Project 2: Business Obligations. Top of Form

BMGT 496 – Project 2:  Business Obligations (30%)

Purpose: In this project, you will discuss and analyze the arguments for and against Milton Friedman’s thesis that the only purpose of business is to make money. You will apply the arguments for and against to a specific ethical issue that you have previously discussed in a weekly discussion.

Learning outcome met by completing this project:

Identify ethical issues that arise in domestic and global business environments using an understanding of ethical concepts and of legal and business principles.

How to Set Up the Paper

Create a Word or Rich Text Format (RTF) document that is double-spaced, 12-point font. The format should be in memo form. The final product will be between 8-10 pages in length excluding the title page and reference page. Write clearly and concisely.

Instructions:

You serve as the assistant to the very recently appointed CEO of a prominent start-up that is beginning to grow rapidly. The new CEO, Tara Richmond, is a former general who gained visibility in the military for her outstanding leadership qualities. Since her arrival, the Board of Directors has had spirited debates on several proposals that would increase corporate profits but would work to the disadvantage of some members of the public as well as other stakeholders. Some members of the board are arguing that the only obligation the company has is to make profits for the stockholders. Other members of the board are arguing that the company has an obligation to the community and to stakeholders other than just the stockholders.

Your boss is baffled by the debate. “When I was in the military, my duties to others were clearly laid out. Here, I am unsure to whom the company owes a duty.” She turns to you for advice, requesting that you draft a memo that explains what the company’s ethical obligations are in situations like these. She asks you to start with Milton Friedman’s opinion piece in 1970, arguing that a company’s only ethical responsibility is to make profits. That can be found at  http://ezproxy.umgc.edu/login?url=https://www-proquest-com.ezproxy.umgc.edu/newspapers/social-responsibility-business-is-increase/docview/2441921739/se-2?accountid=14580.

She also asks you to review a much more recent memo from the Business Roundtable that takes a more expansive view of the responsibilities of a company. The Business Roundtable consists of CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, many of whom are familiar names to her. That memo can be found at  https://system.businessroundtable.org/app/uploads/sites/5/2021/02/BRT-Statement-on-the-Purpose-of-a-Corporation-Feburary-2021-compressed.pdf .

You should do additional research on arguments for and against Friedman’s proposition. Using your classroom materials as well as external sources, respond to the following prompts:

1.  Explain Milton Friedman’s arguments supporting that a company’s only obligation is to make money.

2. Explain the arguments contrary to Friedman’s position including where the Business Roundtable stands as well as other arguments you find in your research.

3. Using one of the ethical issues that you posted in classroom discussions, illustrate for the CEO, how that issue would be resolved using Friedman’s perspective and how it would be resolved using the perspective of the Business Roundtable.

4. Which of these positions do you find most compelling and why?

Your memo should begin with an introduction and end with a conclusion where you make recommendations to the CEO.

Course Material and Research

This project requires you to do research on UMGC Library Databases or on the Internet. You are expected to use course material going beyond defining terms. You are expected to explain the ‘why and how’ of a situation. Avoid merely making statements but close the loop of the discussion by explaining how something happens or why something happens, which focuses on importance and impact. In closing the loop, you will demonstrate the ability to think clearly and rationally showing an understanding of the logical connections between the course material and the question(s) being asked. Using one or two in-text citations from the course material throughout the entire paper will not earn many points on the assignment. The support must be relevant and applicable to the topic being discussed. Points are not earned for mentioning a term or concept but by clearly and thoroughly explaining or discussing the question at hand.

Use this link:  BMGT 496 New Project 2 Template (4).docx  to complete this project.

Review the Paper

Read the paper to ensure all required elements are present.

The following are specific requirements that you will follow. Use the checklist to mark off that you have followed each specific requirement.

ChecklistSpecific Project Requirements
Proofread your paper.
Read and use the grading rubric while completing the memo to ensure all requirements are met that will lead to the highest possible grade.
Submit file in Assignment Folder as a Word or RTF file. No pdf files will be graded.
Third person writing is required. Third person means that there are no words such as “I, me, my, we, or us” (first person writing), nor is there use of “you or your” (second person writing). If uncertain how to write in the third person, view this link:  http://www.quickanddirtytips.com/education/grammar/first-second-and-third-person .
Contractions are not used in business writing, so do not use them.
Paraphrase and do not use direct quotation marks. Paraphrase means you do not use more than four consecutive words from a source document. Instead put a passage from a source document into your own words and attribute the passage to the source document by using an in-text citation.

Changing words from a passage does not exclude the passage from being a direct quote. If more than four consecutive words are used from source documents, this material will not be included in the grade and could lead to allegations of academic dishonesty.

Use in-text citations and provide a reference list that contains the reference associated with each in-text citation.

Note that a reference within a reference list cannot exist without an associated in-text citation and vice versa.

You are expected to use the weekly course materials to develop the analysis and support the reasoning. See the module, Learn How to Support What You Write.  There should be a robust use of the course materials along with a thorough analysis.

The citations must contain the title of the eBook, the chapter title and year. The case scenario facts are not cited but do not use more than four consecutive words when completing the project. If more than four consecutive words are used from source documents, this material will not be included in the grade and could lead to allegations of academic dishonesty.

Submit the paper in the Assignment Folder

The assignment submitted to the Assignment Folder will be considered the student’s final product and therefore ready for grading by the instructor. It is incumbent upon the student to verify the assignment is the correct submission. No exceptions will be considered by the instructor.

NOTE: All submitted work is to be your original work. You may not use any work from another student, the Internet or an online clearinghouse. You are expected to understand the Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism Policy, and know that it is your responsibility to learn about Instructor and general academic expectations with regard to proper citation of sources as specified in the APA Publication Manual, 7th Ed. (Students are held accountable for in-text citations and an associated reference list only). Serious sanctions can result from violations of any type of the Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism including a zero on a project, a zero for the course or dismissal from the University.

Example of Greenwashing

My example of greenwashing would be McDonald’s claim back in 2019 when they introduced paper straws. These paper straws were perceived as recyclable but in reality these straws were not recyclable. This constitutes as greenwashing because they are trying to make the public believe that their straws are environmental friendly when in reality it does more harm than good to the environment.

If I were the CEO, I would not have authorized this ad because of the potential lawsuits this could leave the company in. Not only that but it is a complete false claim that should have never reached the public.

Instead, I would have invested in actual environmental friendly straws that would actually aid in protecting the Earth. Furthermore, utilizing the rights-based model would aid in not only my but the employees working in the company in understanding the purpose of going green and why it is vital for the environment so that we do not continue and potentially permanently harm the Earth with out non-green products, (Gibson, pg. 207, 2007).

Gibson, K. (2007, July 19). Ethics and business: An introduction. Google Books. Retrieved June 28, 2022, from https://books.google.com/books/about/Ethics_and_Business.html?id=qQfuI6VR0rwC

ANDREA’S POST:

Windex the cleaning brand has been known to have an add involving greenwashing. The ad for windex claimed the bottles were made from 100% ocean plastic when they were not.

The article says the plastic used was never in the ocean in the first place. This constitutes green washing because it leads people to believe they are helping when in fact they are not. If I was the CEO, I would not have authorized this add due to the misleading and the upsets it may cause the customers who want to help the earth in recycling.

https://thesustainableagency.com/blog/greenwashing-examples/

ANGELA’S POST:

Find your own example of greenwashing and post it.

An example of greenwashing that I have found was one of my favorite clothing store. Zara is a clothing store that provides clothing for both men and women and children. Zara come out with new brands often and people seem to enjoy buying all their stylish looks.

why you think it constitutes greenwashing.

I believe that it constitutes as greenwashing because Zara has made a promise to its customers that it will transition to

· 100% of their cotton will be recycled

· 100% their viscose and wood-based fibers will be sourced from responsibly-managed forests

· All synthetic fibers will be 100% recycled

With all this being said, they haven’t taken much action on certain ones. For example, they still continue to use virgin synthetics and conventional viscose/cotton. The products take a very long time to decompose, so they haven’t taken any action in correcting this.

If you were the CEO, would you have authorized the ad you chose?

It would chose an add that supports a true claim, I would not lie to my customer because this builds a bad reputation meaning a loss of loyal customers. A business must be able to communicate truthfully with their customers. A perfect example of why it is wrong is when Edwards states, “a Singapore-based nonprofit backed by big oil and chemical companies such as Shell,

ExxonMobil, and Dow – claims to be spending $1.5 billion to clean up plastic waste in developing countries. Despite this supposed goal, AEPW not only failed to honor its promise to clean up the Ganges River in India, but its member organizations went forward with plans to produce even more plastic” (para# 10)

ANTONIO’S POST:

· Find your own example of greenwashing and post it.

· Explain why you think it constitutes greenwashing.

· If you were the CEO, would you have authorized the ad you chose?

· Why or why not?

Greenwashing is defined as when organizations spend funds to seem as environmentally friendly but do the bare minimum to minimize its environmental impact (Edwards, 2022). A company who seems to be using greenwashing is Coca-Cola. Company is false advertising to be sustainable and environmentally friendly but in all reality is not (Joe, 2021). In fact, since 2019 Coca-Cola has been one of the 4 companies that produce the most plastic in the world. Other 3 are Nestle, Mars and Danone. Coca-Cola produced over 3 million tons of plastic during 2019 (Ivanova, 2019).

If I was the CEO of Coca-Cola I would have authorized the use of this ad. Since Coca-Cola is the world’s largest plastic producer, as the CEO I would like to change that narrative in order to see the company it’s doing their due diligence to reduce the plastic production.

The Academic performance of teenagers

How does stress at home affect the academic performance of teenagers? According to Carroll (2019), stress is defined as a response to external pressures, events, or challenges. Carroll (2019) adds that stress is a feeling of physical or emotional tension, which results from scenarios or thoughts that make one nervous, angry, or frustrated. Therefore, stress is how a body reacts to a demand or challenge.

When stress occurs in short bursts, it can be positive in helping one avoid danger or attain certain goals. However, if stress becomes chronic, it will adversely impact a person’s quality of life.

It is vital to note that stress is a normal aspect of life. Nonetheless, even though everyone experiences stress at one point in their lives, how a person deals with the stress is what differentiates between those who spiral into a low quality of life and those who overcome their situations to live a high-quality life.

Like adults, teenagers experience stress. Kidwell and Dunham (2018) reveal that many teenagers experience more stress “when they perceive a situation as painful, difficult, or dangerous and they lack the resources to cope.”

Common stressors for teenagers include changes in their bodies, problems with their peers, school demands, death of a loved one, divorce/separation of parents, negative feelings about themselves, unsafe living conditions, family financial problems, having a high pressure to succeed, and moving/changing schools, among others. From these examples, it is clear that many stressors originate from the home environment.

Thus, the focus of research is on how the stress from home impacts teenagers’ academic performance.

Education is a crucial element in the development of teenagers. Teenagers are growing up in a transforming and constantly changing world. Things like conflict, climate change, migration, and technology are reshaping society at a fast rate. To keep up with the world’s changes, teenagers should have the ability to confront challenges and seize opportunities.

They require skills and education to secure productive work, become lifelong learners, make informed decisions, and engage others positively in society. Consequently, teenagers should have a high academic performance in school in order to enjoy these benefits accrued from education.

However, pertinent research implies that stress impacts a person’s cognitive functions. Marin et al. (2017) state that prolonged periods of stress may result in an overuse of mediators, which switch a body’s stress response on and off. The stress accumulation, referred to as ‘allostatic load,’ may negatively affect the brain.

A high allostatic load is tied to depressive disorders. Additionally, repeated exposure to stress has a cognitive cost. Marin et al. (2017) assert that cognitive flexibility, response inhibition, attention, and working memory tend to be impaired by stress.

These are all vital elements when it comes to learning. In this context, the project aims to research if poor academic performance of teenagers in school can be linked to stress from home. Since it has been deduced that the majority of stressors among teenagers originate from home, the paper will explore if these stressors affect the teenager’s learning ability. The results will shed insight into teenagers’ academic performance and provide a background for coming up with recommendations on how best teenagers can deal with stress.
