Passage of Bill C- 45

In the Legislative Framework, we were introduced to the changes in the criminal code through the passage of Bill C- 45. This was a result of outrage following the mining tragedy at Westray in 1992, when 26 miners were killed in an explosion. A Public Inquiry deemed the explosion to be a story of incompetence, mismanagement and expectancy. With the passage of Bill C-45, corporations and managers could be held responsible and criminally prosecuted for failing to provide the appropriate standard of Occupational Health and Safety

Since the passing of the Bill C-45, there have been serval convictions in Canada. The case we will be looking at for this assignment is:       R V. Merton Construction Corporation

answer the following questions:

State the facts of the case, be sure your answer covers: Who, What, Where, When.

What is your opinion of the passage of Bill C- 45? Do you agree that corporations and managers should be criminal prosecuted for failing to provide appropriate OHS standards?

Define an employee’s 3 rights in a workplace. Could the workers in the Metron Case reasonably refused the work in the December 2009 accident? Explain why or why not.

Define the risk assessment process. Outline 3 hazards presented in the cases, and the risk factors that are associated with these hazards. How could the risk assessment process been used to control and mitigate the hazards in the case?

Describe 3 Occupational Health and Safety recommendations you would provide to Metron to ensure something like this, never happened again.

Continuous performance management

What is continuous performance management? How is it different from traditional approaches?  What are the key issues related to merit pay for individuals in teams?  How are performance appraisals linked to merit pay in organizations? What are the key issues to be considered when designing gain sharing plans?  What issues should you consider when designing a goal sharing plan for a group of sales employees?  Discuss are pros and cons of non-monetary reward programs?

Social media sites and applications

For this discussion, we will take an in-depth look into social media sites and applications. You can find demographics and numbers of users at Spout Social. Choose three of them in your mind before you click to see the demographics of each specific site and then do the research to see what the number of users and the demographics of those users look like. Do they align with what you expected to see? Are the users more or less diverse than you expected? Did you expect different age groups, etc.?

Your original post should be configured to tell us which sites you looked at first. Then you should tell us what you expected for each site (say I did Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter).

Compensable Factor for Music Therapist

A Human Resources employee is tasked to apply job evaluation criteria to new or existing positions, and write a background note for review.

Music therapy is fairly new to the treatment scene. It started after musicians played for hospitalized World War I and World War II veterans, and it’s now an established form of therapy beneficial to our emotional, cognitive and physical health.

Music therapists are educated in music and sound theory, in addition to psychology and medicine, and use techniques such as singing, listening to music and creating music. These various techniques are forms of rehabilitation and stress and anxiety relief, and they open the door to verbal communication.

Evaluate the position Music Therapist (from your perspective) using the Compensable Factors in table Tables 8.1 and then in comparison to the positions listed in table 8.2.

Step 1: table and record the points for each Compensable Factor for Music Therapist (similar to Table 8.1 but for the position Music Therapist.)   Determine and record the total the points.

Step 2:  Once you have calculated the total points for Music Therapist, proceed to verify the position immediately above and immediately below (table 8.2), and then research salaries for the three positions.

Refer to the specific Rubric for how this assignment will be scored.

 Assignment:
a background note (Word document or pdf file) which introduces the position Music Therapist into the hospital Job Evaluation Hierarchy

1)    Include in your completed brief the evaluation of the compensable factors for the Music Therapist position.  Use a table format.
2)    List which position (Table 8.2) is immediately above the Music Therapist position and which position is immediately below (based on Total Points you determined, and using Table 8.2.)

4)    Use the internet to determine median salary for each of the three positions (the salaries you find do not have to align with your rating, it is simply another source of data in your Compensation Toolbox.)   Cite the source(s) (web site) you used.

discuss/analyze how Remember the Titans and Pleasantville explore resistance to change and discrimination (THINK ABOUT: how are viewers positioned? how are these ideas presented?)

Body paragraph 1 – resistance to change – RTT: team’s response to a new coach and African American teammates versus Pleasantville: reaction to changes and colour within the town

Body paragraph 2 – discrimination – RTT: racism (of town, coaches, players and students towards Boone, Julius, Petey, Blue, Rev and African American students) versus Pleasantville: separation of “colored” folk from black and white citizens

Improve each person’s effectiveness

Read the following case studies and choose which type of management style is used by each of the following people. Provide detailed suggestions can you make to improve each person’s effectiveness as a manager? 1. John believes that as a manager, he leads by example. He is by far the best sales person in his store and believes that is why he was promoted to branch manager. He is always busy serving clients and has little time available to listen to staff concerns as any spare time is taken up with managerial administration tasks 2. Michelle loves all her staff members in ACME call centre. She does not see herself as “the boss” but rather as one of the team. Any decisions that need to be made are made collectively by the team. Whilst she has always gotten along with everyone well socially, she has recently experienced some hostile reactions from a couple of the staff in the work environment. 3. Maria is the supervisor of a tour company reservation team. She is proud of the fact that she “runs a tight ship” as everyone obeys her instructions and works through lunch or after work if necessary to complete their tasks for no extra pay. Her reservations team of five have a great reputation in the industry. She always reminds staff at weekly meetings that if anyone ever has any problems, they are welcome to knock on the door of her office and she will assist them. Recently, there have been a few staff absences (sickies) and Maria has heard through the grapevine that two of her staff have been applying for other jobs
